Sorry, no pics of my latest culinary delicacies. I was tempted because they were so fantastic. Perhaps tomorrow….
In the meantime, I must tell you. Something very bizarre is happening to me. First it was the clothing. About a year ago, I noticed it. I could no longer wear leather. I’d become one of those people I used to shake my head and roll my eyes at. No leather for me. No purses, no shoes, no belts, no UGGS (so wanted UGGS this carazay winter!).
It SUCKS that my pinkberry case is leather and that there’s nothing I can do about it because it has a special magnet in it that locks the pinkberry so I don’t dial China by accident or something, BUT every time I look at it, I mourn….
Anyway, I knew this little event — the day I stopped wearing leather — would evolve into even MORE intrusive proclivities…. And, this week — the week the husband traveled sans moi to balmy BAHAMAS — it happened. I’ve become vegetarian almost fully.
I say ALMOST fully because I’m still nursing. ALMOST fully means I may eat chicken, turkey or salmon once or twice a week WHILE gagging. Yes, chicken is becoming physically repulsive to me. It won’t be long before I banish it completely.
I just love animals too much. I empathize with them. When I eat chicken, I FEEL for that chicken! I thank it…, but thanking it isn’t enough for me anymore.
What’s more? Since I started eating vegetarian — really macrobiotic — meals, my weight’s been dropping LIKE IT’S HAWT, I feel cleaner, and I’m less apt to eat at night….
Leonardo Da Vinci was a vegetarian…. So was Einstein! And, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle…. I learned this today while searching for my Thursday thirteen……
I’ll still have to cook nonveg meals, like, for Josh-O and the kids because I can’t make this choice for them…. But, I’ll stick to eating my grains and beans and nuts and veggies. I can still do dairy and eggs. I’ll never give up cheeeeeese.
Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.
-Albert Einstein
…13 CELEBRITY VEGETARIANS! My fellow veggies are HAWT! Check it!!!
1. NATALIE PORTMAN — ““I am a very strict vegetarian … I just really, really love animals, and I act on my values.” Natalie has also launched a VEGAN SHOE line. I MUST check it out…. Cheaty needs some new SHOES!

2. PAUL MCCARTNEY — “Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realized, ‘I am killing him - all for the passing pleasure it brings me.’ Something inside me clicked.”

3. ALICIA SILVERSTONE — “Being vegan helped me realize I can say and do what I believe is right. That’s powerful.”

4. CARRIE UNDERWOOD — “I stopped eating beef at 13 and stopped eating all meat a few years ago. I would feel guilty that what was on my plate was walking around yesterday. Either I could live with that or stop eating meat. I choose the latter, and I’m happier for it.”

5. KEVIN EUBANKS — “I didn’t start eating this way because of concern for animal rights or anything like that,” says Eubanks. “I just couldn’t stand the meat we were getting, and being a broke student, I just gravitated towards fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and some fish.”

6. ALYSSA MILANO — “I turned vegetarian after 9/11. A friend of mine came back from New York and said that he couldn’t stand the smell of burnt flesh. It immediately reminded me of a barbecue.”

7. CHRIS MARTIN (…the silent type, of course)

8. JOSS STONE — “I feel there is no need to cause another living thing pain or harm. There are so many other things we can eat. I have never eaten meat in my life and I’m five feet 10 inches and not exactly wasting away. A wise man once said, ‘Animals are my friends and I’m not in the habit of eating my friends.’ That is exactly how I feel.”

9. PAMELA ANDERSON — “”Chickens, pigs, and other animals … are interesting individuals with personalities and intelligence. … What people need to understand is that if they’re eating animals, they are promoting cruelty to animals.”

10. JOAQUIN PHOENIX — “”Holidays can be murder on turkeys. Let’s make this one for the birds.”

11. SHANIA TWAIN — “I think there’s something odd about eating another living anything.”

12. TOBY MAGUIRE — “I just never really liked meat. I had a really tough time even eating chicken. I would start imagining what I was eating and the life of the animals and all that kind of stuff.”

13. CASEY AFFLECK — “When people ask me why I don’t eat meat or any other animal products, I say, ‘Because they are unhealthy and they are the product of a violent and inhumane industry.’”

Hey, Hitler and Cain were vegetarian too…how about that!
Cain was the world’s first murderer and Hitler is the most notorious one.
But then, have you heard the question?
If God didn’t want you to eat animal, then why did he make them out of meat?

Forgot to say, my T13 is here: http://unsealmylips.com/?p=242
I think somewhere in the Talmud about animals serving their purpose. When they were offered at the altar, they’re food for the high priest. I think God intended for them to be eaten.
The fact that the industry is not always humane about it, has nothing to do with people eating meat promoting anything like Ms. Anderson said.
It’s just like saying all vegan are weirdos. Blanket statement like that don’t help. They incite something…and sometimes, that’s not good.

I was a vegetarian before I got pregnant with my first, and then I suddenly craved ribs and clam chowder, at 7 months I caved… but now, I only eat chicken and fish, chickens really are nasty stupid birds, if you have ever raised them, seriously you would want to kill them… on the other hand, I did as a kid raise steers for 4-h, and when my father had my prize steer butchered, I swore off red meat… make sure you do your research as it can be difficult to get enough protien in your diet without meat, and make sure to get enough iron as well… if you are gonna do it, do it smart, so it can last, don’t let yourself slip to a fad, that is hard to keep up…

Dear CM,
If you want lots of good reasons to cut out meat take a look at “Twenty-One Reasons to Eat Like a Vegetarian” on HealthyHighways.com.
For more than 35 years we having been working - mostly through books to make vegetarian cuisine easy and reliable through time and taste tested, nutritionist approved (and developed) recipes and nutrition and cooking guidelines. In 1983, we published a cookbook with 1300 vegetarian recipes, “American Wholefoods Cuisine: 1300 Meatless Recipes from Short Order to Gourmet.” In print for more than thirty years it is considered the “vegetarian Joy of Cooking” by both gourmet and health writers. It is one of the only (perhaps the only) vegetarian cookbooks that use only unrefined ingredients - which are vital to good health. For more info on this and our other vegetarian books please visit us at HealthyHighways.com Thanks

Go for it. I think that as long as you are healthy about it and you are not pushing your family to make the same choices as you, you should do what makes you feel better.

Interesting post. I’ve thought about becoming a vegetarian, but I just can’t do it. I just love that first steak of barbeque season. We often have meatless meals, but I doubt we’ll ever go all the way. My husband has an aversion to eating meat off the bone - thinks it’s barbaric. He’ll still eat meat, it just has to be boneless. My husband is a weirdo.

Today you’ve made me think. I don’t think I could give up meat entirely BUT there are moments I take a bite of something, think too much, then cannot finish my meal…maybe I will vow to eat less meat. What keeps you full without the high proteins? I find if I have not had enough protein throughout the day I am really hungry in the evening.

plus, casey affleck is married to joaquin phoenix’s sister, and that family is pure hippie.
funny, after years of being 1% away from vegetarian, I am back on a little more meat than usual. organic, of course, and NO beef, but still…

We are about 90% vegetarian. My hubby’s family freaked out when they found out we were cutting meat out of our diets, they wouldn’t know how to feed us when we stayed there. As to not upset them we still eat what they fix(except me if it is beef-can’t stand beef) and the kids still eat chicken nuggets and sausage pizza. Most meals I make are meat free. There is an awesome Betty Crockery cookbook called Everyday Vegetarian I get over half of our meals from.
Good Luck

I won’t claim to be vegetarian, but we don’t really cook much meat in our house. We don’t avoid it, but at the same time, it’s far easier for us to make scrambled eggs (that Matt eats) than meatloaf.
When I was growing up I was raised vegetarian, and though we would have meat at my Grandma’s or at restaurants, at home my mom chose to prepare meals without it. (we ate cheese and milk).
I never felt deprived. But it was a way healthier way to live.
Once I moved out on my own a lot more meat got incorporated into my diet (my husband’s family is a meat and potatoes family) but now we are at a happy medium, I think.
And, honestly, we live fairly close to a meat processing plant - it’s by my train stop. They make pork products. I’m not kidding you - I see them driving all the pigs in and it breaks my heart. Really, I can’t tell you the last time I had pork.

hi Haley i think that is an awesome choice for you to make.and just for the record quionoa is a complete protein.also you will get more than enough protein from grains soy and legumes.as for iron there are non-animal sources like blackstrap molasses etc.as for calcium you could choose non dairy sorces for that too.i am mostly vegetarian i do eat some fish but am trying to eat healthier and more vegetarian as my 7 year old is showing an interest in eating this way.
LoriD April 3rd, 2008 at 10:11 am
Wow - I had no idea about some of those celebs vegetarians. Joaquin was the biggest surprise - he looks like a steak guy! I’m pescatarian (eat fish, but not other animal meats). Like you, though, I will prepare chicken and sometimes beef for the family so they can make their own decisions later. Having said that, they get beef OR chicken only about once a week, so we’re mostly meatless!

You got some interesting comments today Haley ! Chicken is the hardest for me to eat ! Eww ! I eat red meat at my mom’s but I haven’t cooked it for myself in 3 months. I know that being anemic or borderline I shouldn’t really give it up completely. I just prefer cooking vegetarian. I think if I became totally vegetarian, it would make life very complicated.
I do not share your love for animals (I know, I’m heartless !) but I care for them and the conditions in which they are raised only to be eaten are concerning. Sometimes. My uncle’s cattle live a good life.
ali April 3rd, 2008 at 10:27 am
mmmm….meat…
the truth is, i’m not a huge meat eater…but i do love it. sometimes it gives me the heebie-jeebies when i overthink it and then i can’t really stomach it. but i see nothing wrong with the whole man-eating-meat concept.
and i have respect for vegetarians and meat-eaters.
you have to do what feels right for YOU.
you’ve been straddling this fence for a long time - miss mammalian!! don’t use nursing as an excuse…plenty of vegetarians nurse!!
i say go for it…if it affects you this much!!

I sort of lean towards vegetarian…when I eat meat I have to deliberately ignore where it comes from. I would seriously think about making the switch except that my husband freaks out at the very mention of the word. So I usually do vegetarian breakfast & lunch, but supper with hubby usually does include meat.
I think it’s great that you can make this change. Someday maybe I will get there too.

while vegie might be the right thing to do, a bunch of celebs are not going to convince me. I think this has to be a choice you make on your own, not to just follow the crowd.
I totally support you Haley, you have to do what works best for you and I know that you’ll make sure to take care of yourself and your family.
No matter what choices we make in life we ALL have to do what works best for us.

Drea April 3rd, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I think God gave us animals to eat.
So I dont think its cruel to kill them for a source of food. my husbands family use to farm hogs actually. I think as long as you dont torture them when killing then its totally fine.
I personally dont eat beef though. I dont think thats a healthy choices of meat.. even when organic. I prefer leaner meats.
But I dont think its weird to eat something that was walking around. And as far as being alive.. plants are just as alive as animals. Although I suppose when you eat a plant you eat the fruits of a plant and dont kill the actual plant itself.. but you get the point

but some of the celebs sure sound one sided
I think if you can do it though more power to you. I think its a very healthy way to live as long as you get enough protien else where. But theres no reason to ever down a person who chooses otherise
Not saying you were!

I like meat. Mmmm. Meat, meat, meat. Bring on the meat! I think animals were put on the earth to help sustain man. But that is just me. I am an animal lover too, and it does bother me from time to time, but not enough to make me not like meat. I do understand that side of it, though.
I do think it is strange that celebs try to “promote” being a vegetarian. WTH? Why are they always trying to make people do what they do? Just weird.

I have been a vegetarian for years and did it for health reasons. I have never ever felt better. It’s also great for the environment … there’s been tons of studies that it is one of the biggest things you can do to help global warming (more than buying a hybrid car or turning your house solar panel or recycling etc).
My hubster is still a meat eater and I am not a veggie-preacher but I am really glad about my choice.
And veggies are hawt!!

Good for you! My middle child and I are almost there, but not quite yet. My boyfriend is vegan and I’m sure that combining households later this year will be the push we need to become fully vegetarian. I don’t think I can go full vegan because I do like some dairy. I don’t and won’t push it on my other two children but I do feel worse when I eat meat.

hey i just foud your blog and love it! anyway its intresting what you said about gradually becomign a vegetarian and just being repulsed by chicken. I was that way too, i havent eaten red meat or pig for about 8 years and then about a year and a half ago i just didnt want to eat chix or turkey anymore… everyhting was just repulsing about it… the way they are treated, the fact that they were once living, the meat industry and they way they taste. so i just stoped eating it and feel so much better! anyway i thought your process was interesting and caint wait to here more.
